TOP’s interview for “L’Officiel Hommes” Magazine: “Let’s talk at home (In My Room)” [TRANS]

Before the interview, it made me hesitant whether I should call him TOP from BIGBANG or Choi Seung Hyun. When he walked in to the filming scene, I finally figured out the answer. That he’s definitely Choi Seung Hyun today looking at his super thin and sharp self. Movie <Alumni (The Commitment)> that will be in theaters in November is about a North Korean boy Lee Myung Hoon living a disguised life as Kang Dae ho to save his one and only sister Hye in (Kim Yoo Jeong) and all the hardships he endures. As someone who is always being chased, he is not allowed to have friendship or emotions like any other kids and those things scar his body. The one who has to talk about all these complex stories is Choi Seung Hyun, our main character for today.

L’officiel Hommes (LH): So we’re interviewing you as an actor not a singer today. I heard that the film company prepared the movie having you as the main character in their minds.
Choi Seung Hyun: Yes. Thankfully… Actually there was a funny episode. I almost never even got to see the scenario of this movie. After my manager put it in my room, I always just looked at it from a distance and past by it and never really looked at it. The title of the scenario was called ‘Alumni’ and I was like “Is this a high-teen romance? Some high school melo drama?” and I just left it there. But about a month later, someone called me. He asked me if I read the scenario. That’s when I finally decided to flip the first page and start reading it.
LH: You don’t like getting roles that represent an idol star’s image?
Choi Seung Hyun: It’s not that I hate it but I wanted to do something more serious. Maybe that’s why I didn’t do as many movies. Besides, I’m the main character for this movie. It’s a happy thing but at the same time it’s a burdensome thing. 3 years ago when I filmed <IRIS>, it was not common for idols to actively participate in big scale dramas or movies like that. After first appearing on <I am Sam> in 2007, I realized that it’s already been 6 years from that. I decided that I should start showing different sides by acting in different movies or dramas one by one.
LH: If I look at your past works, you usually have a role with not many lines. You probably liked it since you didn’t have to memorize a lot. Are you good at memorizing lines?
Choi Seung Hyun: Thankfully I’m pretty good at memorizing lines. If I don’t understand the complete scenario, I can’t really act out the character well. I guess that’s a normal thing but when I start, I think by myself a lot and I keep organizing my thoughts continuously. More than anything else, when I get something new I have to stay be in a state of tension so I try to control my mind a little more.
LH: That reminds me of the movie <71: Into the Fire>. Honestly I wasn’t expecting much from it but you didn’t get discouraged by any of the other actors at all. But on one hand, it was doubtful because it was kind of like an expansion of the image of TOP from BIGBANG.
Choi Seung Hyun: (Nods) But this movie is different. When I looked at the scenario, the first thing that came in to my mind was ‘Wow, this is hard.’ But then I was like ‘If I do this well, it’ll be a very nice, sophisticated movie.’ The fact that I’m someone who came from North Korea and living as a south Korean high school student is already fictional enough. And I thought that if my emotions are too expressive it wouldn’t look sincere so I should control it. I always asked endless questions to myself like ‘Why would I do this? What is something that I have to understand from this?’
LH: Was there anyone special that helped you out during the preparation for this movie?
Choi Seung Hyun: I had so many that I can’t even choose one. Thankfully the director and all the senior actors kindly answered all my questions. But since it’s my work, I still had a lot of responsibilities. A movie has to move the audience’s heart. Depending on its result, you could get praised or slapped in the face by the audience.
LH: Now that I think about it, this is your first movie in 3 years.
Choi Seung Hyun: That’s right. Every time I filmed a movie, I also worked on an album too. It wasn’t decided but now I try to do at least something. I feel these responsibilities for my fans since I rarely ever have any solo promotions. I think about this a lot in my daily life and have a time for self-examination. It’s like a time I ask a question to myself and I answer it myself.
LH: Self-examination? Wow. I haven’t heard that word in a while.
Choi Seung Hyun: (Serious) I’m not kidding. I seriously think about myself and what I do everyday. Well, at least I try to. ‘Am I going in the right path?’ I ask myself. I might look like a mischievous boy or an arrogant rapper but I am actually dark inside. And Myung Hoon in the movie is also a dark, complicated character. He’s like a character who met an unexpected danger and who fell into a bottomless pit. It requires a much more varied inward dramatics. He could just look like the same killer as in IRIS, but this one is different in that it’s not in the image of TOP from BIGBANG.
LH: You must have put a lot of effort to become Myung Hoon.
Choi Seung Hyun: I wanted my dark sides that I never showed on stage to be seen on the screen. I wanted to look lonely even when I’m just standing. The best way to learn how to do that was to stay by myself. I didn’t meet anyone for about a year. I spent a lot of time by myself. I even told that to my company, YG. I don’t want to do any promotions so don’t plan any schedules. It must have been hard for the manager since he had to cancel all the requests for my appearance on TV shows and stuff.
LH: I guess you’re a fussy actor for your manager
Choi Seung Hyun: Probably. I do whatever I want to do and only do what I want to do not only in movies but as in BIGBANG as well. After the movie shooting ended and the final movie release date was announced, my younger members told me this. “Hyung, we’re going to go see just how great that movie is.” I didn’t know but apparently my members tried to stay away from me during tours to avoid conflicts. They said that they couldn’t even dare to talk to me because I looked so sensitive and sharp.
It didn’t take long for TOP to become Choi Seung Hyun and Choi Seung Hyun to become Myung Hoon. But the movie that started filming in the cold January weather ended in hot midsummer and he confessed that he spent his time hiding for a long time. At first it was his plan to focus more on the movie. Because he wanted to be seen as different from what the audience knows him as, BIGBANG. But even after the movie shooting ended, Myung Hoon was still there in him. Few months before the release of the movie, Choi Seung Hyun couldn’t do any promotions. He just lay in bed the whole day or drank at home by himself for 5 months. He says that he’s thankful for his company for understanding his situation. He was afraid that he might fall in a deep depression so he pulled himself outside of his house to meet people. Like that, he started pulling himself together and finally stood in the spotlight of now.
LH: Such a deep person and you started dancing as soon as you got here. You did that twice.
Choi Seung Hyun: I’m actually a really tender person (Laughs). Actually I’m really sensitive. Even before I became a celebrity and even when I was little, it was the same. I still wake up several times in my sleep. But I don’t oversleep either. Even when I don’t have any schedule, I still wake up at 10 in the morning.
LH: I can tell that you’re really shy.
Choi Seung Hyun: Even in TV shows or even in movies, there are so many people with a strong aurora. We call it ‘nerve war’ and I don’t like to be in that situation. I try to avoid it. Honestly I don’t want to waste my energy on something useless like that. I’m going to try to pour as much energy as I can in front of the camera or on stage. So these kinds of photoshoots and interviews make me shy. That’s why I just started dancing as soon as I entered the studio earlier. Haha.
LH: You’re 27 years old this year. Even a normal man at this age starts thinking seriously about reality, right?
Choi Seung Hyun: Hmm. Compared to earlier days, I try to enjoy my hobbies more. For example, I enjoy going to galleries or furniture stores. It significantly helps me to focus on something new. I guess I could say that it gives me inspiration.
LH: Don’t guys usually focus more on shoes or clothes? I remember you said that on your old interviews too. You being interested in furniture is kind of like looking at a whole house itself. Like that, did your view on the world widen?
Choi Seung Hyun: In a way, my job is like a clown. Being a singer or an actor is a job where you have to like commercialize yourself. I’m not the only one who exists and I have to turn myself into someone. When I think like that and look at tables and chairs at a department store, those artworks look different and I start to feel different. Because I can see that it’s an artwork that the designer poured his or her heart out, trying to make other people want it and to catch their eyes. I could also be a product made like that. When I have free time, I like to go to galleries or exhibitions by myself. So I meet people with lots of interests in interior design or furniture often. They’re usually a lot older than me but I don’t feel the age gap when we talk about those things. It’s actually really fun.
LH: Oh yeah, I heard that you helped a lot with the interior design for Taeyang’s house.
Choi Seung Hyun: Eyy, not really. I didn’t really do much. He picked it well himself. Like I said before, I do love furniture. I like architecture so I started reading books about it. Actually, I have a private warehouse other than my house. I collect bath supplies, furniture like chairs and tables and sculptures.
LH: Wow, really? Is that like your way of relieving stress?
Choi Seung Hyun: Yeah. I think I like everything that’s pretty. I guess I obsess over things that are beautiful. My body can rest while looking at something beautiful. When I was young, I really liked clothes. I bought a lot and I collected them. Now that I’m in my late 20s, my desires for clothes have decreased.
LH: I heard that your role model is Mark Ronson…
Choi Seung Hyun: No, I never said that he was my role model. NEVER. I wonder how that story came about? Who said that? How can I copy someone who is living in the same era as me? I don’t like that. That was just the popular style of Europe. Then would you say that everyone in England and France copied Ronson? I’d rather have David Bowie as my role model. Then I’ll admit it. Anyways, coming back to the question, I realized that it relieves my heart when I look at paintings or furniture in times of suffering. Even when I go on tours overseas, I took some time to visit art museums or galleries by myself. Right now I’m really into surrealism.
LH: Let me guess… Dali!
Choi Seung Hyun: Oh, that’s right! I actually have some furniture with a design motive from Dali’s work. I really like the crooked furniture of Gaudi as well. When I have collected enough stuff, I’m thinking about opening a little museum. Those things were something that I could not see when I was little. When I get old and when I can collect more things, I want to make a space where even little kids can see. Well, it’s just a wish for now.
The ‘Much older hyungs’ that Choi Seung Hyun talked about are Top stars that are at least 10 years older than him – Jung Woo Sung, Lee Jung Jae and Lee Byung Hun. They can talk all night with just one bottle of drink. He learns about acting and controlling from them. The one who also encouraged TOP to read the scenario was a CEO of a big film company. But he never mentioned them during the interview. He also has famous furniture from overseas and has unique stories for each of them. He could brag about them all but he’s very careful like that.
The interest Choi Seung Hyun has for furniture is not just a plain luxury of a rich idol. Nowadays he is making a chair inside his head. He makes a project and sketches it. He is carefully dreaming for that day when he can actually make it in to a real chair. We could see TOP laughing and joking when we started talking about his hobbies. Unexpectedly, before we talked about this, his lips were shaking. His legs were shaking too. He had a green apple in his hands and he stared at the wall as he talked. He’s such a charismatic, proud person on stage but he got so nervous for a little interview. It’s so surprising.
LH: You don’t like doing interviews like this? Should we rest for a little?
Choi Seung Hyun: I don’t hate it but I didn’t have many opportunities to do it. But I like how the interviewer is not a guy today. I like doing interviews with girls like today (Laughs). Isn’t it normal to like doing something with the opposite sex?
LH: Like what
Choi Seung Hyun: Hmm. Lately I’ve wanted to fall in love
LH: What happens if you love?
Choi Seung Hyun: I’ll get richer in emotions. Everything I do will go well since I would want to look cool in front of my girlfriend (Laughs).
LH: What was the stupidest question you’ve ever heard?
Choi Seung Hyun: “Which fan was your favorite?” and “Which fan was the most impressive?” Every fan is so precious to me so how can I say who I like more and who I like less? I said this before but I work with the responsibilities I feel for my fans. Those responsibilities motivate me. Hmm… This is the first time saying this here… I’m actually preparing a single album.
LH: Now you’re getting comfortable!
Choi Seung Hyun: I don’t really know the specific goals or the specific date for it yet. I feel sorry for my fans because of my rare activities. So yeah, that’s how I’ve been working on it.
LH: It’s an album made as a rapper TOP, right?
Choi Seung Hyun: Yeah. It’ll probably be nothing like the TOP you’ve seen before. I really want to make it the way I want it to be. I want to write songs too and give some opinions on producing. I want the music video concept to be extremely shocking as well. I told this to my manager and he said “It’ll be screwed if you do it the way you want.” and sighed. Haha. He said that my preferences are not very likable by the public. But if I knew that someone could do better on this movie, I wouldn’t have started it. I’m not trying to see how much the public likes my new single. I just want them to think like “Ah, he tried something new.” Or “Ah, he makes it different when he does it.” and that would be enough. I hope they can see the little details I tried to put in.
LH: Actor Choi Seung Hyun and Rapper TOP. Are they different?
Choi Seung Hyun: They’re both TOP. I don’t think there is a real Choi Seung Hyun
LH: You’re strict about that. Who is closer to the real Choi Seung Hyun?
Choi Seung Hyun: That doesn’t make sense either. There can’t be someone as Seung Hyun. I never have a place where I can show the plain Choi Seung Hyun. I have things I want to hide and I have things I have to hide. Starting to act was not my choice at first. I don’t want to lie and say that I got into acting because of my great passion. Unless you’re lucky to be in the circumstances to do whatever you want to do all the time, I think there are things in your life that you can do well at certain times. I want to act and do music as long as I can. I will probably stop when I feel like I don’t have the talent anymore. It’s not arrogance, but it’s like having more energy than others. I act normal and then when I go on stage, I enjoy and go crazy like I’m possessed. But that doesn’t mean I enjoy everything in life. There’s nothing that’s easy either. But I’ll have to explode again this time.
LH: You know what? You just made eye contact with me.
Choi Seung Hyun: (Grins) I was too shy.
LH: Okay. Now I’ll give you some time to define yourself. Describe yourself in one sentence.
Choi Seung Hyun: Ah, this should be good. “Hey, I’m someone who appeared after a long time.” It’s true. So it’s okay, right? When I was younger I used to introduce myself like “I’m that guy whose always drunk.” All my friends are really weird and I’m considered pretty normal when I’m with them. Oh yeah, I wasn’t saying that I was always drunk in my teenage years. Please make sure that you write it was my early twenties. Haha.
LH: Okay. Now stop getting more serious!

BIG BANG 10 ASIA INTERVIEW PARTS 1&2

The world is defined into before and after the Big Bang. Of course, this is in regards to astrophysics. It was only after the Big Bang that time, space and order came into existence. And it is now that group Big Bang seems to fit their name better than ever — not because the tracks to their fourth mini-album released in two years and three months has topped various music charts and public broadcaster SBS and cable music channel Mnet created separate comeback programs for them. On March 4, Big Bang said in an interview that they will not dwell on how high they rank on charts nor on promoting their album and instead spoke of how they want to create a new idol group culture and their hopes for the music market. Below are excerpts from the group interview.

T.O.P’s Japanese Magazine “Aera” Interview
AERA: It has already passed the scheduled time for the meeting and he still have not arrived yet. Then I heard that he was not feeling well that day, but he pushed himself to go to all the scheduled interviews. Then he finally arrived. Just as I was feeling relieved, he started to look through the AERA magazine that he bought himself and suddenly said, “I will go and get change”.
It seemed that the clothes he was wearing didn’t match the concept. I waited for a couple of minutes, then he came back with a stunning jacket on. He wore interesting shoes that looked like it had some nails hammered on them. When I asked for the brand, he said “Louboutin”. The Christian Louboutin that has been featured on such blockbuster films as “Sex and the City”. That was my first time seeing a man wear Louboutin.
T.O.P: Yes, these are my personal shoes. I chose the shoes to go with the clothes. I love fashion.

AERA: In fact, when he played the role of a cruel assassin in the drama “IRIS”, he was also concerned about fashion. He says that in “IRIS”, he put out ideas for himself and thoroughly discussed with the stylists. The black suit and trench coat made him look more like a fashion model than an assassin. From the 7:3 style to the loose perm, his hair changed a lot. He can surely be called a model after saying, “I wanted to create the picture of an assassin that everybody would imagine”.
The film to play the leading role for the first time, “Into The Fire”, starts off with this shocking line, “Mother, I killed people”. This spectacular action film is based on a letter that a 10th grade student soldier sent to his mother. T.O.P played the role of the student soldier leader, Jang-bum.
T.O.P: Before receiving the script, I never thought of myself being casted on a war film. However, this film is nothing like the other war films that I’ve seen before. This film is about sensibility and humanitarianism. It is about the 71 student soldiers who fought against the elite soldiers of North Korea.
With my music activities, I want to express to the world certain “sensibilities”, and I felt that I was able to express that by playing Jung-bum. That is why I participated in this film. I believe that those young Korean who are struggling to find a dream might be able to find one by watching this film. Also, I thought that if I participated in this film, a lot of young people might watch it and be interested in the topic.
AERA: He didn’t feel the pressure to play the lead role, he felt “responsible”.
T.O.P: I debuted as an actor in 2007, with the drama called “I Am Sam”. However, this time I had to show the people that I had grown in the three years. I felt responsible for that.
Of course I felt pressured. This film is based on a true story about the Korean war, so as a Korean, I felt the pain. I felt pressured to express that feeling in the film. However, I didn’t feel that I was pressured just because it was a film. In fact, if this was a TV drama, I would’ve felt pressured. With a film, it is released after the video and sounds are put together and everything is ready, but with dramas, the shooting continues while it is on air. That is why I felt that to show something new about me after three years, this had to be a film. I thought a film was something that could wow the fans and audiences. So this was a whole new challenge for me.
AERA: T.O.P is now 23 years old. He says to play a 17-year-old student soldier, he tried to think of what he was like when he was 17 and studied about the student soldiers of the Korean war.
T.O.P: The character of Jang-bum was born when the 17-year-old boy in the script and the 17-year-old me intertwined with each other. There is a scene where during the war, Jang-bum writes a letter to his mother facing a desk. When I saw the scene, I saw the 17 year old me in Jang-bum’s figure. When I was 17, I would sit in front of the desk and write what I felt in my heart as lyrics. Jang-bum wrote the letter in a tragic situation and I was writing lyrics with enjoyment. It seems so similar, but completely different. I was thinking about those things to form his character.
AERA: There is a weird tense feeling you get when you watch the scene where Jang-bum is holding two boxes of bullets with a cartridge case on him, and he is desperately running through the bombs. Like a puppy drenched with rain, the eyes of Jang-bum is filled with fear. T.O.P says that this particular scene was the hardest and yet the most rewarding scene of the film.
T.O.P: Lee Jae Han, the director, values reality in a film. That is why when I did the scene, I ran without being told where the explosives were. It was a dangerous scene, and if I did it wrong it would take a long time to remake the set again. It was as if we were in the real battlefield and I actually felt shocked with the amount of tense and fear around me. There is a scene where I fall and an exploding Jeep flies over me and I thought I was going to break my eardrum with the piercing noise. That time I actually wanted to run away from the set. However, when I saw the scene on the film, there was a young Jang-bum on the screen and not me. I felt proud of myself.
AERA: His acting skills were praised and in November last year, he was awarded with the best new actor award in Korea’s largest film festival. However, he seems to be cool about it. He says, “I want music as my main career, but I want to act as well. From now on, my music and acting activities are 5:5″.
T.O.P: I’ve been creating music since I was 11 or 12 years old. It might be that I’m quite satisfied with music already. However, acting is still a new field for me and I still lack in many things. In order to perfect it, I have to keep acting. If I start something, I seek for perfection. I have the greed to make my acting just perfect. That’s why I want to keep acting.

GD&T.O.P interview on Inkigayo

GD&TOP “Our mindset is the fruit of freedom”
The duet who makes 4 hit songs, with selling record of 15 thousand copies. Lee Eun Jeong reporter: “Before they make song using their brain but now they make it using their hearts. Not using their mind but using their instinct to make a sincere music, they’ve reached their dreams by doing this.”
Lately I’ve met the two members of BIGBANG, G-Dragon (Kwon Ji Yong, 23) and TOP (Choi Seung Hyun, 24) in a café in Yoeui-do, and they speak about their Duet group’s first Album, ‘GDTOP’. In this album they’re creating a harmony between G-Dragon’s sharp yet light voice color with TOP’s heavy and low-tone voice, just like a harmony between tenor and bass. When BIGBANG’s rap is made to be heard more like the type of popular songs, but this two have put a lot of genre like electronic, disco, and rock into their hip-hop based music. They even bravely challenge to put an underground-like tone in some of their songs. As the result their title songs, ‘Oh yeah’ ‘High High’ ‘Knock Out’ ‘Don’t Go Home’ and the other songs released at the same time, and their album pre-order reached the number of 15 thousand copies.
“The thing that make us really proud is, those rappers who only can speak their critics towards us now even gave us their acknowledgement. And also it seems like the underground rappers have changed their mindset towards us. Mindset like because we’re just members from an idol group we can’t create a significant result in hip-hop, and that our hip-hop was mainstream, this kind of stereotype have changed.” (GD and TOP)

“Personality…freedom in thinking”
The two rappers’ music, stage performance, and fashion showing their strong personality. This is the reason why everything in every step they take will be a trend. “Our mindset is the fruit of freedom,” the two members said. Different from the other idol group, the way this two make their own music, and the difference starts from how they compose their own music.
“From the moment I open my eyes I would go to the studio. There I will eat my meal, and when there’s inspiration I will start to compose, when my idea is all stuck I will play games or dances around. We might said we stayed up all night long for composing a song but actually the real time we use to make the music is probably less than an hour.” (G-Dragon)
“We didn’t think of it as working. We will write the lyrics while having chit-chat, we will go in to the recording room when we feel like it. Everytime we come into the studio it’s like we’re piling up the colors for the song little by little. Perhaps that’s why you can feel the freedom in the output too.” (TOP)
Of course as a composer they have gone through some agony as well. G-Dragon said that “Mr.Inspiration didn’t come again’ When I said things like this I feel like I’ve been squeezing my brain but there’s nothing came out, in times like this I feel that making music is like working. But it’s just like an actor learning their script in an acting relay, as a composer we also doing this (composing) like we’re having fun.”
This two also give dramatic changes in their performances and their fashions. The adjustment between the basic lineout of the song with the stage setting and lighting keep changing also.
The two members said that, “Lately in the music world what important is the song, it’s not about the appearance of the singer, it’s not a game with a winner or a loser,” they also said that, “In order to receive public’s attention we have to provide them with something interesting to see and talk about. We’re showing various type of performances and trying various styling, almost like doing a fashion show, it’s all for the people who always wanted new things”.
“You’ve break those stereotypes about rap music”
Because you’ve made your music without giving attention in other aspects you’ve met with a rock named ‘deliberation’ now. ‘Knock Out’ is claimed using lyrics that are too vulgar while ‘Don’t Go Home’ is a little bit too suggestive; you’ve been banned from some TV station because of the censoring issue.
“Rather than worrying about TV station’s censoring, I think it’ll be more meaningful to make a song that will make all of the music fans out there feel satisfied. Actually I don’t have that good kid image so the broadcasting company could act partial like that. Haha~ And about ‘Knock Out’ actually I took the inspiration from drama , in that drama Kim Seon Ah have this dialogue saying “I’m going to knock you out! I will knock you out!” so I wonder why in the drama this kind of lines didn’t become any problem while in the song it does become a problem?” (G-Dragon)
Although they received criticism but their music showing some ‘experimental’ feel in some of its parts.
The track ‘Knock Out’ that composed by American famous DJ and producer, Diplo, at first its almost feel like a boring track but after the rap with the beats added it has become a track with a very thick sense of hip-hop. In ‘Baby Good Night’ there’s acoustic guitar combined with dreamy-like rap. In TOP’s solo song ‘Oh Mom’ there’s a feel of rock sound, and in G-Dragon’s solo song ‘What Should I Do’ there’s a feel of a rock and roll rhythm.
Both of them said that “We wanted to break the mindset that ‘if the two rappers doing music, they’ll only do those raps you couldn’t understand’” They also said that, “Both of us have strong colors but as we tried to mix it more colors will come out.”
“BIGBANG rumored to have a new track with a sense of rock”
Around the half part of this month the two of you will go back to do activities as BIGBANG. In the upcoming February 14th BIGBANG will release a new album while in the February 25th until 27th you will held your 2011 Big Show Concert with approximately 4000 attendants in Seoul Olympic Gymnastic Stadium.
“BIGBANG’s recording is almost finished. Until now BIGBANG enjoyed energetic music and lyrical music, but this time we’re want to have something new, a track with a rock sense. I’m not really sure if it’s because the country was so screwed up back then, but people nowadays seems like they’re looking for some laughs without thinking everytime they switched the TV on. That’s why this time rather than heavy and machine-like music we want to show them some warm and exciting music” (GD and TOP)
The two members said that “BIGBANG ’s stage will be so much fun,” and also, “We also don’t know what lies inside us. Because to a singer a stage constitution is like a hidden stage, when we’re all on the stage we will be a very different person and when we come down we will become those fools who likes to fool around,” they explained while smiling.
BIGBANG that received big popularity in Japan will continue their activities there on May until July, after their activities in Korea ended.
G-Dragon said that, “We have some ‘share’ that we have to do there,” and continuing, “This time we will be doing the promotions properly and for three months we will stay there. After that we will go back to Korea and we will keep doing activities inside the country until year-end. Anyway for now we have a worldwide composer participate for our album. It’ll be a very fresh turning point for BIGBANG” he also explained.
“We’ve reached our dreams but we lost our image”
BIGBANG boys that debuted on year 2006 has been receiving a lot of love since then, but there’s also a lot of gains and losses in their lives.
TOP said, “I no longer can differentiate between the feelings that I have to express in order of doing my job, or is it the usual me who have become very moody; I feel like I’ve lost myself,” and he added, “But through this kind of new experiences people can know themselves better.”
And G-Dragon who had been doing broadcastings since his childhood said,“Since I was a kid I always dreamed about becoming a singer who received a lot of love from many people,” and he also said, “Now I would be very satisfied if there are some friends who grew a dream of becoming a singer after they saw me. But I’ve lost my image. I’m such a good kid but now I have an image of a wasted, foolish, and unmannered kid,” he said that while laughing.

Seungri says “T.O.P’s face should be in a museum”
During the guesting of GD&TOP and Seungri on CHJ Powertime, the question, “who’s the most good-looking person?”, was asked. Big Bang’s maknae, Seungri, answered:
“T.O.P is most definitely the most handsome person. He was good-looking even before debut and to be honest, he’s been a very handsome person since forever.
From the looks of T.O.P hyung, his face should be put in a museum for “the most handsome man. Even now, he’s good-looking. Look at his eyebrow!”

“Hey! Don’t you dare gain me any anti-fans!”

T.O.P reveals Seungri would choose women over Big Bang

G-Dragon, T.O.P, and Seungri of Big Bang participated in the SBS show “Choi Junghwa’s Power Time” recently and demonstrated their humor and wit. When asked by DJ Choi Junghwa, “Which member acts the most different in front of women?”

T.O.P replied,“If you asked Seungri to choose between Big Bang and women, he’d probably choose women. Artists always like women.”

G-Dragon revealed Seungri’s dating skills by adding, I’m his roommate so I know. He’s the type that would keep in contact with many women at once but would not officially date them.”

To this, Seungri replied, I believe men have a responsibility to make women happy. Women who have boyfriends say they enjoy hanging out with me, so I have to tell them to be nicer to their boyfriends,” which brought much laughter to the studio.

GD&TOP discuss slave contracts and will keep their love affairs a secret!

Since they have risen into the fame both in Korea and overseas market, BIGBANG has also become the center of different rumours. In the past two years, the members carried out their solo activities individually, so there have been rumours about how they do not go along with one another well and their secret love affairs, etc.
The due unit G-Dragon and TOP have shared us their thoughts about these issues in a recent interview with us.

Q:The fellow members are different from one another but they know the minds of their fellows well= that means these two members have already been aware that there would be rumours about their disagreement to each other. This question is not only applied to them but also other artists in the showbiz.
GD and TOP : Although we have different interest no matter when we are producing music or relaxing ourselves, we still know the thoughts of each other well.’ The president always says, ‘I think you guys are dodging other bands, it is not friendly enough.’ Since we do not approach others very actively in front of the camera, the third party would perceive us as not very friendly. Even to our fellow member, we would not actively express our fondness to them just like we do not always say ‘ I love you’ to our family members very actively. However, we have not changed much. We, as a two-member group now is an ideal group since more chemical effects can be given out if there are two people of different characters working together.’

Q: Beside saying you guys are not getting along well with each other, there are even rumours about the rivalry between you and your management company. Concerning their relationship with YGE, the two men also explain it to us clearly.
GD: Although we cannot be perfectly satisfied with the company but we can always resolve our conflicts with music. To us, it is the most important if the company can provide sufficient resources for us to make music. Our company is always generous in allocating resources in producing music. That’s why we do not have much dissatisfaction towards the company. It even pays attention to our ideas in promoting our songs.’

Q: How do you think about the contract conflicts between DBSK and KARA with their management companies?
GD: We are also an idol group so we do also pay attention to these issues. In fact, we do not treat them as others’ business only. We do also try to learn from their experience in case that we have to face similar problems in the future. We don’t want to accumulate a large amount of problems which can contribute to the conflicts in the future. If we do not solve our problems as soon as we discover them, there will be more problems coming up. No matter whether we are the artists or the companies, the most vital thing is we have to uphold our righteousness in dealing with the problems. ‘
TOP: This is exactly because Korean artists are becoming more and more famous in the overseas market, we have to bear more responsibility accordingly. Since I have been interviewed by the Japanese press when I was promoting ‘Into The Fire’ and a reporter asked for my opinion about the conflicts happening in KARA. It seems that Japanese think that it is a common problem which can be found among Korean artists which did make me sad. The rumours are obviously exaggerated to some extent so I hope the public can trust the artists and the artists concerned can solve the problems soon in order to carry out their activities again.

Q: Both of you do not feel good concerning the conflicts which would break out between the singers and their management companies. It seems that everytime when they have to renew the contracts, problematic situation would arise.
GD and TOP: It is not appropriate to call the contracts that the singers signed as’slave contacts’ since it is wrong to equalize singers with slaves. We detest those people who regard artists as commodities.

Q: You would keep their romantic affairs secret= G Dragon and TOP have been said to be in a relationship with a Japanese model and a famous actor respectively.
GD: (laugh) Although that rumour is fake, in fact, I do not totally dislike rumours about me falling in love. I am jealous of the Hollywood stars who can face these rumours relaxingly. According to Korean age, I am already 24 year old so it is normal for me to fall in love with someone. The love experience can be of great use to me if I have to compose songs. However, as I am an artist, I have to keep my affairs in secret. Recently, it seems that our fans have also changed their mind and support our stance. The President does not ask us about our love life but he told us if we really have a girlfriend, we have to have meals together.

Q: TOP also agrees on the practice of keeping your relationship in secret?
TOP: Yes, I will do so too. Although different people might have different ways to deal with their love affairs, I certainly will hide mine since I think it gives me confidence in keeping the relationship.

Q How do you feel now when recalling the scandal of plagiarism when you were promoting solely in 2009?
GD: I think it is very scary to be the focus of all the people around us. I lost my confidence and did not even want to see my family members. However, when I look back now, I seem to have undergone the suffering of growing and now I know that if I have to be more mature, I have to make sacrifices. Haha.’

Goethe Interview Translations

‘I want to become that kind of person who ‘will devote all of his youth to his work’
This busy and supreme Korean artist has attracted attention from us as an artist now. He might not be so familiar to our readers. However, his insatiable passion and ambition towards his career is really outstanding and appreciative.

I want to be those pioneers who can initate changes in the traditions
Has he ever suffered because of it? No matter what, TOP still chose to take this path. He made such a surprising confession in Japan despite the fact that he has becoming more and more popular in Japan, not to mention in Korea.

‘There has been such a period of time that after I had finished all of my acting and shooting, I returned to my room which I have no companion. Suddenly, I could no longer distinguish whether I was in the reality or not. Yes, I have had experienced such a period of time before. I have suffered insomnia because of this too. The frequency was not low too.’

T.O.P talks about acting, the new album and his ideal girl

▶ T.O.P has been praised for his acting skills in the film, Into the Fire, and has also claimed the newcomer award in the 31st Blue Dragon Film Festival.
T.O.P: I think my dyed hair suits the concept of the new album. Not many Koreans would dye their hair like this because it’s like making your head bleed to get right color successfully. The color was just too eye-catching for an awards ceremony. I heard that some people said things like "Is it because he wants to get an award that he dyed his hair like that?" and "What if he doesn’t get it?" I got annoyed a bit by these but I felt so happy when I got the award that I wasn’t even expecting to get… though I really got bothered by those words.

▶ In Into The Fire, T.O.P successfully carried the character who possesses an unfathomable power and won the newcomer award. During the award giving ceremony, the “white head” of T.O.P was particularly eye-catching when he was walking on the red carpet. T.O.P: Two days before attending the ceremony, I dyed my hair with this colour for the shoot of High High’s music video. To be honest, I was embarrassed to present myself with this hairstyle in front of so many veteran actors. I also worried about not getting the award because my efforts, then, will be all in vain. I actually felt guilty when I received the award because getting it with this kind of look will be recorded in Blue Dragon’s history… Why did I have to get the award at that time?

"We gave a lot of effort in making this album!"
▶ Immediately after the filming of Into the Fire, he returned to the studio to create the new album, GD & TOP, in order to surprise fans who have been waiting for BIGBANG’s album. T.O.P:How about forming a duet?” Although we made the album with this kind of thought, we didn’t just make it carelessly. From High High and Oh Yeah, which can suit the tastes of people from all walks of life, to Don’t Go Home and Baby Good Night, which are about how a man yearns for a woman until they fall in love with each other, songs which tell stories are found in tis album.

▶ The response is quite good since almost all of the songs in the album have swept music charts, which shows how popular the album is. T.O.P: We really gave a lot of effort in making this album and the response is better than what we expected. We plan to extend our period of activities until we satisfy our fans.
▶ We shouldn’t worry about the delay of BIGBANG’s team album with this statement because he said…T.O.P: We are carefully working on the album at the moment. What we want is that we can promote for as long as possible before the release of our team album.

"I do feel stiff, sometimes, when I am acting."
Although everyone praises him as the best actor with the singer background, this hasn’t made T.O.P complacent…T.O.P: I didn’t have confidence in acting before I participated in Into The Fire. I am that kind of person who will be only be calm if I am confident enough. I am working hard on my weaknesses now.

He was afraid of acting badly in the well-received KBS TV drama Iris too…T.O.P: I’m not normally talkative in real life so it felt really difficult when I was told to act out my character without detailed guidance.

Now, as an acclaimed actor, T.O.P has also set new targets. T.O.P: There are so many excellent veterans. I learn a lot from them when I look back at their glorious past. I want to polish myself and present some new things in the industry to show that I am a wise latecomer too.
So, how do you rank your acting?T.O.P: Since I am currently at a period where I want to act as much as possible, there are still a lot of things that I want to present. I think it is still too early to rank my own performance now.

"Of course, it would be nice to meet an attractive girl…"
How can you dislike this man? But surprisingly, he has been single for a long time.T.O.P: I like to stay at home a lot together with my timidness. I always want to flee away from strangers because I am afraid of them. Although there are times that I have thought that it would be great if I had a girlfriend, my heart still tends to allocate my leisure time to working.

This proves his determination to do things well. Once he encounters the things that sparks his ambition, he will work hard to achieve them. Although he said that he’s concentrating on work at the moment, he still has his own ideal girl, who is wise and gentle. T.O.P: If she is able to lead me to a better place and point me to the right direction, then she would be the right person. I like the role of a follower, although sometimes, I would like to lead too.

▶ So, are there girl group members who can meet his requirements?T.O.P: In the past, I was too busy to watch the music programs. Usually, I stay away from watching too because with so many people performing well, I was worried that I would imitate them unconsciously when I perform. But I am a fan of all girl groups even though I am like that. Haha!

“I don’t like being judged as a singer that is transforming into an actor.”

“I learned acting from watching my seniors”
Role of a student soldier… purposely not washing and giving up looking good. Now wants to become an ‘actor who does profound work’
His real name is Choi Seung Hyun. As a singer he’s TOP, as an actor TOP(Choi Seung Hyun). As he rises up as an actor through the film Into the Gunfire, what’s the reason for notating both his stage name and real name side by side?
“I worked for five years with the name TOP. The public knows me as TOP, and I didn’t want to bother using my real name Choi Seung Hyun. But putting the word TOP on a movie poster didn’t really fit. It’s a war movie set in 1950. So we put both names on the poster.”
Into the Gunfire tells the true story of 71 student soldiers who fought at the Pohang battlefield during the war in 1950. TOP/Choi Seung Hyun was given the role of a character who was modeled after a real person, Lee Woo Geun. According to the production company, this true story will convey the pain of having to kill another person in order to preserve oneself in the nightmare that is war.
It is well known that TOP was cast for this movie while he was filming for the drama ‘IRIS.’ Both projects were produced by Tae Won Entertainment. TOP expressed that showing his face on ‘IRIS’ was like ‘sitting on pins and needles.’ He had to receive both praise and insults. More than anything, he had a difficult time putting significance on his role in the drama, which appeared suddenly and without warning.
“A movie lasts forever. After getting the role of the student soldier, I tried many different things to do the job well. I purposely didn’t get rid of any dirt that got stuck under my nails, and I didn’t get any dental scaling done in order to make my teeth go yellow. And of course, I gave up trying to look good.”
TOP was the youngest of the cast for this movie. He says that he learned a lot just from acting alongside his seniors Kim Seung Woo, Cha Seung Won, and Kwon Sang Woo. More than anything, because he was the youngest on set, he gave his all no matter what he was doing. Even when iron filings got into his left eye causing cornea damage, to him that was no difficulty.
“Whenever I went back to my room after filming to wash up, I would discover all these bruises and cuts. But I couldn’t make a big deal out of it. I was in a situation where I had to learn more than anything else. I didn’t have the leisure of taking care of myself.”
TOP revealed his future, the determination he has when he goes on stage. He says that he has never gone on stage thinking that he was an idol singer. If he had thought that way, he would have been unable to keep himself within his given boundaries. It his pride that he has his own unique charm that other groups don’t have and other rappers can’t pull off.
“Now, it feels like I’m standing in the the middle of judgment. I don’t like being judged as a singer that is transforming into an actor. I just want to do both music and acting. And since I did start acting, I do have dreams. I want to be an actor who does profound work. Isn’t that possible if I just have passion?”
